Rongai Mountain Route

Rongai is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro near the Kenyan border, along you to see some wildlife as you begin your ascent to the summit.  This route begins from the north side of the mountain and is similar to Marangu route, being a gradual and steady climb.  For a paced, hike, with less traffic and less precipitation, Rongai is an ideal route and hikers using it have had great success in reaching the summit. This route offers you the chance to see Mount Kilimanjaro from both sides.

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Arrival –Welcome to Tanzania!

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport.  A big smile waits to meet you and transfer to a hotel in Arusha for overnight stay before the great trek the next day.

Day 1: Nole Moru Gate – Simba Camp

After breakfast and a short briefing from your mountain guide, gather your belongings and make your way to Marangu Gate to handle all the registration and clearance before heading to the entrance gate of Rongai route to begin the climb.  Begin the ascent from the attractive wooden village of Nale Moru, hiking on a wide path that wind through fields of maize and potatoes before entering the pine forest.  The track then starts to climb consistently but gently through attractive forest that shelters a variety of wildlife life.  As the forest begins to thin out, you enter the first camp at the edge of the moorland zone with beautiful and amazing views of the Kenyan plains.

Day 2: Simba Camp – Kikelewa Camp

This morning walk is a steady ascent up to the Second Cave with superb views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch, you leave the main trail and strike out across the moorland on a smaller path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. The campsite is in a sheltered valley with giant Senecious near Kikelewa Camp.

Day 3: Kikelewa Camp – Mawenzi Tarn Camp

Continue on a short but steep climb up grassy slopes where you will be rewarded with superb panoramic views and a tangible sense of wilderness. Camp is at Mawenzi Tarn spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. This afternoon feel free to rest or explore the surrounding area as an aid to acclimatization.

Day 4: Day to Acclimatize at Mawenzi Tarn

Today, you will explore in this area while resting for the summit.  This extra day has proven crucial for success on summit day.  You can hike up and around Mawenzi for your acclimatization hike.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn – Kibo Hut

After breakfast, you cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo hut campsite at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall.  The half day is spent on resting for the final ascent which begins at midnight.

Day 6: Kibo hut – Uhuru Peak + DESCEND: Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Just before midnight you will begin your final ascent to the peak. It will take 6-7 hours to reach the crater rim.  Sunrise on the Crater is going to be something to remember forever.  The sun rising over the plains of Africa and diffuse light highlighting the nearby glaciers is truly a world class experience.  After a coup of hot tea, we will continue along the rim for another hour before reaching the highest point in Africa, Uhuru peak.  You will spend up to a half hour on the summit and then begin the 4 hours descend to Barafu Camp.  At camp we will rest for a few hours and then walk down to Millennium cap.  This is a great 4 hours walk with each step adding more oxygen.

Day 7: Horombo hut – Marangu Gate - Moshi or Arusha


After breakfast this morning, you have a 3-hr walk down to Marangu Gate.  On your arrival, it will surely be time to celebrate your team and receive a certificate from the Park authorities.  Saying goodbye to your team, the driver is there waiting to transfer you to a hotel in Moshi for overnight.  If extending your stay in Tanzania on safari, you are then transferred to a hotel in Arusha for overnight before you begin the next leg of your trip
